Pure Planet Energy

Get an online quote for gas & electricity at a UK company prioritising renewable energy.

Pure Planet is a UK green energy supplier with 100% renewable electricity, 100% carbon offset gas and great customer service…

Update: I update my Pure Planet review at least once a month. Last update: 5th May 2021. On with the analysis…

Choosing a new energy supplier in the UK can be an ethical conundrum these days. We want our electricity and gas from renewable sources but wedon’t want to pay overboard for the energy we use.

Prior to joining Pure Planet in December 2020 I was a happy customer of Bulb Energy for over 4 years. Bulb use 100% renewable electricity and they offset their gas use with carbon reduction projects while buying a chunk of their gas from renewable sources too. See my full Bulb review for more info.

As 2020 drew to a close I headed over to Money Saving Expert’s energy club to find out which UK green energy company had the cheapest prices for renewable electricity and gas. And that’s where I found Pure Planet.

I could save a few pounds every month by switching to Pure Planet without sacrificing the 100% renewable electricity and gas offsetting I had with Bulb. The next thing to check was Pure Planet’s customer service. In January 2021 over 7,000 Which members rated Pure Planet their joint top recommended provider, 5th out of 35 energy providers, resulting in ‘Which Recommended Provider’ status for the second year running. I then headed over to Trustpilot and their 4.6 out of 5 rating from over 17,000 customer reviews sealed the deal.

Signing up to Pure Planet

So I waved goodbye to Bulb and, December 14th 2020, started the switch to Pure Planet’s 100% Green Energy Fixed Direct tariff. A few minutes was all it took to fill out my details and, despite the Christmas holidays, I was fully connected to Pure Planet 17 days later on December 31st 2020.

A Welcome Pack landed in my inbox with clear details about my energy charges, term dates and exit fees (£30 exit fee if I left before the year was up).

So far so good and I didn’t have to move a muscle.

£50 friend reward

Something else that swayed me to switch to Pure Planet is their ‘refer a friend’ offer where you each get a £50 Reward if they sign up with your link. So tell your friends and family and they’ll not only get £50 but you will too – the £50 offer lasts until 20th May so don’t hang about!

Free Smart Meter Installation

A few months in and a friendly person from Pure Planet called to ask if I wanted to book a free smart meter installation. I checked to make sure it was the second generation smart meter (SMETS2) which works even if you switch supplier. They confirmed it’s the latest model so two weeks later my ancient gas and electricity meters were replaced and a second generation smart meter was installed in a couple of hours by Magnum Utilities for a total cost of zero.

Pure Planet uses the Geo Trio II Smart Meter, (download the smart meter guide), it’s really easy to use with a simple display of your gas and electricity costs per day and lots of other options I probably won’t use. Watch the introductory video below of the Geo Trio II, and don’t worry about its energy use, it only uses about 70p a year!

It also means no more meter readings ever! Not that they were a pain with Pure Planet before – they send you a reminder email every month to enter your readings via the app or website which couldn’t have been easier. Speaking of websites…

Using the Pure Planet Website

Pure Planet’s website is clean and slick on the outside with inspiring images of wind turbines, blue skies and fluffy clouds. On the inside, not so much. Log in to your account and it’s very much back to basics with an old school design and a lingering sense that Pure Planet would much rather you use their app.

Pure Planet Website

Despite the somewhat dated look and feel the website’s still very user friendly and easy to use so it’s no problem finding your way around account balance, meter readings and energy usage. Still, would be nice to have a design refresh for the app allergic among us!

Pure Planet Website

Things improve nicely on the Pure Planet community website where you can search frequently asked questions on every subject imaginable related to signing up, smart meters, charges and more.

Pure Planet iOS & Android Apps

No complaints with the Pure Planet app. I’ve only used the iOS version for iPhone but the Android version looks and functions pretty much identically. You can do everything you can do on the website from providing meter readings (if you don’t have a smart meter) to viewing your account balance and energy usage or asking for help with an issue.

Pure Planet Mobile App

Pure Planet also partner with Hometree if you want to cover your boiler for services and repairs. My Dad signed up with Hometree last year and has been happy with everything so far, not to mention it’s a fraction of the cost of the British Gas boiler cover he had before.

5 month Update – May 2021

Since switching from Bulb energy to Pure Planet everything’s gone swimmingly. I’m saving a little extra every month, enjoying the new smart meter (no more meter readings ever!) and sleep a little easier at night knowing my energy use is, as far as currently possible from a UK provider, coming from renewable sources. Early days though so stay tuned as I update this throughout the year.

Conclusion

Overall I don’t regret switching from Bulb to Pure Planet and feel confident to recommend them to family and friends looking to switch to a renewable energy provider.

Pure Planet is a green electricity & gas supplier with friendly customer service, sound principles, 2nd generation smart meters and a nice sign up bonus to get you started.
